Have you felt stressed this week?
Doctors will frequently recommend mindfulness as part of a stress reduction program.
People always ask me, “How do I start mindfulness?”
Some common roadblocks emerge: They’re busy, they’re “not good” at mindfulness, they forget to do it, or they don’t know how to be mindful.
I understand, because I remember when I first started mindfulness.
I hated it.
I was putting myself through college and working 60 hours a week. I had a boyfriend, constant homework, and trying to make ends meet. I slept very little and drank gallons of coffee.
My mind was anything but calm.
I struggled to make it through even one yoga class. When the teacher would say, “calm your mind” or “clear your head,” my mind seemed to get busier.
I resisted mindfulness for years.
I knew I “should” do mindfulness but I couldn’t make myself stick with it.
Then I had a traumatic brain injury and was forced to slow down. Suddenly, I had no choice but to learn to meditate—if even for a minute at a time.
I found that with consistency I was able to get “better” at mindfulness. That’s why I first started sharing my mindful minutes on Mondays. And that is why I am launching a mindful minute texting service: to help you learn to practice mindfulness for even a minute each day.
